The Hills Green Thumb Garden Club began in 1985.  This year we are 40 years old.  For a small social club I think that is an amazing achievement. Sue Smith is the fourth person to take on the running of the club.

Our core activity is visiting private and public gardens but in reality we are much more than that.  We provide a social activity which helps with maintaining social connections as we age.  all members a monthly Newsletter with details of forthcoming events.

We include the all important morning tea and an opportunity to chat and meet like minded people.  We provide an activity for couples where one has dementia to participate in a much needed opportunity for an outing. We also provide workshops which are hands on mostly in topics such as propagating and pruning.  It is a very friendly group of mostly women aged 60 to 95.  One of our members has been with us for 38 years!  Not all our members are active gardeners, a lot live in retirement village and some even in apartments so the social side for them is very important.  Getting out in the fresh air is also something we provide instead of sitting in a hall listening to talks which until now we have not done. A lot of our members are actively involved in other groups so are a great source of information of social groups available in the area.

Details:

We meet twice a month from January to May and September to December with one or two activities in winter.

We meet on a Friday from 10.00 till 12.00 at gardens mostly in hills but some in suburbs.

We currently have 95 members with 25% membership from Adelaide but mainly from the Hills.

We have shared morning tea. The club provides an urn with tea or coffee and members bring a small plate of food to share.

Our subscriptions are $20 per single member per year or $30 for a couple membership.  There are no concessions.  If members attend all our functions the cost is less than $1 per meeting including a cuppa!  Who provides a social activity for that nowadays!

We conclude the year with a Christmas lunch in a members garden.

We conduct Bring and Buy stalls and the occasional raffle and are affiliated with Garden Clubs of Australia Inc and have insurance cover for public and personal liability.
